Mini-profiles of STEM Role models 6
Given the popularity of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at the University of Groningen mini-profiles, I have decided to extend the series to continue to provide as many role models in STEM as I can publish.
If you’re interested in taking part, please e-mail me your answers to the questions below and a fun picture of yourself at: k.m.tych@rug.nl with the title ‘STEM Role Models mini-profile’. Thank you!
This mini-profile is of a Postdoctoral Researcher in structural biology, Julia Kratky. I hope you enjoy it and the rest of the series!
Job title:
Postdoc
Subject area:
Biomolecular X-ray Crystallography
How did you get into science?:
I was a strange little kid that used to run around in nature while carrying a book about fungi or herbs, always on the hunt to find something awesome so it was no wonder my path led me into science. Starting in elementary school, I had the clear vision to become a scientist that can be of benefit for humanity with my studies. Growing up in the centre of the beautiful Thuringian forest in Germany my focus was set on environmental protection ever since.
Where else have you worked/studied?
I did my bachelor and master of science with focus on biomedicine as well as my PhD at the Leipzig University (Germany). Afterwards I went straight for a postdoctoral fellowship at Groningen.
What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?
I love to visit heavy metal festivals and concerts. Furthermore, I have a deep connection to nature thats why I like to spend my time at awesome places on this planet like going hiking/skiing in Austria. On the opposite side I’m a real nerd/gamer/weeb. Im playing a lot of RPGs and Im totally into Japanese culture as well as manga and anime.
